NEW YORK (AP) – The stars returned Tuesday for the return of the Golden Globes to television, walking the wet grayish carpet in relatively predictable appearances – with a few notable exceptions.
A look at fashion from the 80th Golden Globes:
NO MORE WORM
Heidi Klum, shortly after her Halloween worm appearance, appeared in a high silver sheen with a feather adornment draped over one shoulder as the crowd was treated to a break from the rain that lashed Southern California. Her showgirl look was by Kevin Germanier.
Also in silver? Angela Bassett in Pamella Roland, along with Jessica Chastain in a glittery Oscar de la Renta spider web bodysuit.
PEOPLE
There were a lot of black suits and tuxedos. Eddie Redmayne showed up in black and brown with a huge silk rosette on one lapel, courtesy of Valentino. Another standout: Colman Domingo in a custom black-on-black combo with glittery embellishments from Dolce & Gabbana.
Elvis, also known as Austin Butler, entered the building in a traditional black tuxedo, while Andrew Garfield chose orange with an open collar on a black shirt underneath.
Jeremy Pope looked dapper in a black Dolce & Gabbana leather three-piece suit with matching silver studded boots.
Donald Glover was practically in PJs. His comfortable robe and loose trousers were white. His tuxedo was black. The look was Saint Laurent.
“I just want to be comfortable,” he said.
METALS
Abbott Elementary’s Sheryl Lee Ralph in jewel blue with chunky embellishments led the parade of trains in her turtleneck look. It was from Alietta. Viola Davis also opted for a royal, flesh blue by Jason Wu.
Chloe Flower, who will perform a song during the show, went in a long train in a white, slightly decorated bag.
Niecy Nash-Betts wore a beautiful deep purple dress with a chunky sparkle, paired with a broad shoulder coat and long matching opera gloves. Both were done by Dolce & Gabbana.
There were also healthy displays of gold, including adorable 19-year-old Bailey Bass from “Avatar: The Way of Water” in a long, delicately patterned look.
Michelle Williams wore an ethereal one-shoulder ivory look trimmed in gold. Her edgy Gucci look included a high side slit.
Women kept their jewels to a minimum.
COLOR
Pregnant Abby Elliott chose a burnt orange with sequins all over by Pamella Roland. Her lamp had long blouson sleeves and a high collar.
Jenny Slate wore an emerald green outfit from Rodarte. She told E! her short dresses with a large flower around the neck which she aimed for “a woman who will turn into a magical plant”.
Among the standout looks was the E! host Laverne Cox in a sexy blue and silver goddess dress, with old Hollywood hair in a bob. Her look was vintage John Galliano.
Billy Porter walked in a maroon tuxedo by Christian Siriano and silver high-heeled boots with sparkles. It was similar to his groundbreaking black tuxedo dress, also by Siriano, that caused a stir at the 2019 Oscars.
Anya Taylor-Joy chose a sunny yellow two-piece Dior look with a small bandeau top. Margot Robbie was dressed in pale pink Chanel embellished with beads and feathers, while Lily James went old school Hollywood in 50 meters of red fabric. Her look was tailored for Versace, a column dress with accentuated hips and a strapless top that crisscrossed at the waist.
Jenna Ortega also chose a crisscross look in a breezy, ruffled copper color. It was Gucci combined with Tiffany & Co. necklaces.
Letitia Wright wore Prada in orange and white.
SPECIAL COOPERATION
Sepideh Moafi, an Iranian-American actress, wore a black sequined look with a high slit and a large red rosette on her hip. She worked with Iranian designer Amir Taghi and Haus of Milad on the look.
“The dress has many stories,” she told The Associated Press, “but the most important of them is this flower, which represents the flowering of a new Iran during this revolution.”
She was referring to the months-long wave of protests in Iran that have challenged the country’s ruling theocracy.
THE ONES IN BLACK
Jennifer Coolidge (Dolce & Gabbana), Quinta Brunson (Christian Siriano), Jamie Lee Curtis (Valentino), Natasha Lyonne (Givenchy). Black looks abounded.
Emma D’Arcy also wore a black, oversized tuxedo trouser and skirt combination – and another large rosette on the lapel – finished off with indigo gloves. The look was created by Acne Studios. They wore heavy dark makeup with a single blue tear under one eye.
“It wasn’t sustainable,” D’Arcy, who is non-binary, told E! to be forced to present herself as a woman in the industry.
