While Y2K and ’90s fashion have been big in recent years, ’80s looks are also making a comeback — especially for 2023. This year already feels bolder than years past with bright geometric patterns, dance-inspired looks, and more of those oversized blazers (with or without shoulder pads). Luckily, not everything is brought back from the 80s, but when it comes to bold, playful statement looks, expect to see a lot of 80s influence. Given that fashion often goes through 20-year cycles, it’s not surprising that we’re seeing the 80s make a comeback. After all, it’s been 40 years, which means everything that made a comeback in the early 2000s is making a comeback—but with a new spin. If you’re looking to bring back the 80s while still being trendy (or just plain curious), check out these looks.
Try bold geometric prints

The 80s had its own particular aesthetic when it came to brightly colored geometric prints — a trend that carried over into the 90s and is back today. Look especially for jackets with bold colors and geometric designs. Think of ski jackets or windbreakers that you wear as statement pieces.
Go big and channel your inner dancing queen (or king)

Bright colors were popular in the 80s and are still popular in 2023. What else is important? Jackets are oversized, often to the point of exaggeration. Another aesthetic to look out for is a dance-inspired look, like ’80s sportswear with a ballet feel.
Throw on a beachy hoodie

Hoodies, skateboarding and surfing were popular in the 80s, and this vibe is back in 2023. Think beach-inspired with a retro vibe. Bonus points for the geometric design.

Pantsuits have made a comeback in the last few years with a decidedly oversized ’80s cut. For 2023, expect pantsuits to become a bit more fitted while bold colors will continue to be on trend.
Be futuristic with your eyeshadows
Amelie Stanescu during Berlin Fashion Week AW23 on January 18, 2023 in Berlin, Germany.
Futuristic cyclops sunglasses were popular in the ’80s and are back — if you’re brave enough to try them on. If this look is too much for you, brightly colored frames and anything with a futuristic feel will do.
Bring back the metallic
Tina Haase during Berlin Fashion Week AW23 on January 18, 2023 in Berlin, Germany.
One of the best parts of the 80s was the playful attitude brought to fashion, and metallic fabric is part of the fun. Think pants, jackets, and accessories—anything cool that looks futuristic and adds a striking edge to your look.
Wear a daring oversized jacket as a dress

Who needs pants when you have an oversized blazer? Oversized blazers were a favorite staple of the 80s and pair well with miniskirts for a powerful look that’s both strong and sexy. Add a bright color to really make it stand out.
Think bright colors and vests

So far, all bright colors are pretty obviously on trend. Something we’ve seen less of in recent years are vests, but look out for more vests in 2023.

“Purple Rain” anyone? Dressing like an 80s megastar is good inspiration for what’s trending in 2023 — bright colors, vests, collared shirts, corsets and shoulder pads are all in good company.
