With just a week to go before the Fall/Winter fashion season hits the Paris runways, Louis Vuitton (LV) brought in Brooklyn-based Colm Dillane, founder of KidSuper, for a menswear design collaboration.
In the post-Virgil Abloh era, the luxury fashion house has its eyes set on reintroducing the collaboration on the catwalk. The announcement was made on January 10, 2023 after Louis Vuitton collaborated with Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama on an avant-garde collection featuring eclectic motifs and hand-printed dots on classic LV designs.
Colm Dillane and Louis Vuitton Collaboration: More Details
Collaboration and fashion week
It’s important to note that while Louis Vuitton is bringing in Dillane as the first guest designer to create silhouettes for the men’s department, he’s not taking the reins as creative director.
This partnership comes in time as the brand will launch its Fall/Winter 2023 menswear collection in Paris on January 19. The show will be created “with the participation” of Dillane and will reflect his creative vision. The statement also said, “in other words, Colm was embedded in a male studio.”
Speaking with Women’s daily wear, Vuitton chairman and CEO Michael Burke said, “It’s about chemistry.” And in doing so, he pointed not only to Dillane, but to a group of talented and creative minds who will make men’s clothing a vision. These include filmmakers Olivier and Michel Gondry, known for their music videos for Daft Punk, Foo Fighters and Björk, stylist Ibrahim Kamara and set designer Lina Kutsovskaya, he says The New York Times. The presence of a world-famous musical sensation is also hinted at.
Who is Colm Dillane?
Dillane, 31, got his start by selling his own designs on the streets of New York’s Soho as a high school student. In 2010, he became a math major at New York University, and in 2018, he launched SuperKid.
A multimedia artist and entertainer, Colm wears a few feathers in his cap. He played professional soccer in Brazil for a year and has directed award-winning short films, music videos and sold-out solo artist fashion shows. He was also rejected three times before finally being approved to exhibit his designs at Paris Fashion Week 2019. Amazing experiences and real-life stories fueled his thoughtful mind and are reflected in his creations.
In 2021, LVMH awarded him the Karl Lagerfeld Award. The following year, in 2022, Dillane became a CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalist and a CFDA nominee for American Emerging Designer of the Year.
AND Vogue Business the report also states that two days after the Louis Vuitton project, Colm Dillane will return to Paris Fashion Week with KidSuper and “bring fashion and stand-up comedy together”. Sound intriguing? Wait to see what happens.
KidSuper designs and collaborations
KidSuper was instrumental in introducing bold graphic prints and out-of-the-box designs. What started out as an NYU dorm room business has now grown into a brand worn by Jack Harlow, Gucci Mane and Mac Miller.
One of the signs of the label is the ‘love’ motif. The design resembles two people kissing and is a canvas for Dillane to display his graphic skills and imagination as he plays with contrasting colors and shades. It is used on puffer coats, raincoats, jackets and handbags and is a significant part of all his collections. ‘
Some of KidSuper’s famous collaborations include brands such as Puma, Suicoke and Tommy Hilfiger.
