CNN host Don Lemon’s fashion choices infuriated Tucker Carlson on Friday night—so much so that the Fox News host compared Lemon’s style to self-harm.
To clarify his oddly specific fashion frustrations about Lemon, Carlson enlisted longtime Republican operative and self-described fashion guru Roger Stone.
“He showed up to work the other day dressed as John Fetterman. Kind of a homeless vibe, he was wearing a hoodie with a coat,” the Fox News host said opening the segment as she concluded that Lemon’s outfit must be a “cry for help”.
Carlson then asked Stone — who has a well-known history of publishing best and worst dressed lists every year — to weigh in on Lemon’s wardrobe.
“I made an international best and worst dressed list,” Stone said. The provocateur further stated that the CNN host should now be ready to be on Stone’s “worst” dressed list.
“You’re right. This is dead wrong from every point of view, unless of course you’re running for US Senate in Pennsylvania,” Stone joked.
Stone then theorized that Lemon – who recently donned a white jacket and white T-shirt – is looking to star in the Miami Vice remake.
But then Carlson had to take it a step further.
“There’s bad taste, but then if you continue along the spectrum, you get to self-harm, and that’s where he is. He’s hurting himself,” the Fox News host said before comparing Lemon’s fashion choices to “cutting.” (A CNN spokesperson did not immediately respond to The Daily Beast’s request for comment Friday night.)
Stone responded by calling the world of high fashion a “slippery slope” before referring to another one of Lemon’s outfits without a “formal bow tie.”
“No one would wear shorts and a jacket unless, of course, you were in Bermuda. So it’s either reaching for a new constituency or it’s a senatorial cry for help,” Stone added.
Stone has long called himself a fashion expert, but his critics claim he has no idea what he’s talking about.
Men’s fashion editor Derek Guy—who occasionally appears in The Washington Post and writes for the fashion blog Put This On—has been less than impressed with Stone’s fashion choices over the years. Guy joked that the stone pocket square looked like “hotel towel”, one of his shirt collars was “give birth on a tie,” and the dirty swindler should be “found guilty of tinkering, but innocent of narrowing.”
Guy once summed up his thoughts on Stone’s self-proclaimed fashion expertise.
“Roger Stone’s dressing makes him look like a clown. He claims to like classic menswear, but his actual style is embellished with too many jokey elements,” Guy wrote. “Cut-out collar, explosive pockets, lapel chain, goofy glasses, etc.”
